Book illustration: Kokachi and Makachi

In 2020, I had the opportunity to illustrate the children’s picture book ‘Kokachi and Makachi: Down to the Village’ authored by Greystroke and published by One Inch Margin. Kokachi and Makachi are two little monsters who live on a hill. They are very different other monsters — they are terrified of people! One cold winter, they decide to go down to the village in search of a warmer place. Nothing unusual about this, except that the village is full of… people! Are the monsters ready for this adventure? A delightful story that is small on monsters but big on laughs!

My favourite part of illustrating this book was designing the three adorable characters- Kokachi, Makachi and Byovai. The story was written in such an adorable way that the illustrations had to match that! I used gouache for all 15 black and white illustrations and a combination of gouache and photoshop for the cover which us in full colour.

A few character iterations

Some final illustrations from the book.
